From Month-Old Reporting to Near-Real-Time R&D Portfolio Intelligence

Business Challenge

A global pharmaceutical company managed a complex R&D portfolio using information distributed across project management, clinical, financial, resource and operational systems.

Producing the portfolio reporting required by executive management was largely manual. Analysts collected, cleansed, reconciled and transformed data before assembling dashboards and analyses.

The process took approximately one month.

By the time executives reviewed the portfolio, the information was already a month old. At the same time, highly skilled portfolio analysts were spending much of each reporting cycle preparing data rather than analyzing it.

The organization had the information it needed. The challenge was turning that fragmented information into timely, reliable management intelligence.

The Objective

We defined the objective around a simple principle:
Automate the production of portfolio information so analysts could focus on understanding what it meant.

That required more than building better dashboards.

We needed to create a common portfolio intelligence environment that could integrate previously disconnected data, apply consistent definitions and business rules, assure data quality, and continuously transform operational information into decision- ready portfolio intelligence.

The goal was to move from month-old, manually assembled reporting to an integrated, near-real-time view of the R&D portfolio.

What We Accomplished

We designed and implemented PRAD, an integrated R&D portfolio management and intelligence platform connecting clinical, project, financial, resource and operational information within a governed data environment.

PRAD transformed a month-long reporting cycle into a largely automated, near-real-time capability.

Analysts shifted from collecting and assembling data to analyzing the portfolio, identifying patterns and exceptions, and developing conclusions for management.

Adoption was rapid. Using a train-the-trainer model, PRAD grew to nearly 700 users globally within a company of approximately 5,000 employees.

The platform became part of the organization's executive decision- support environment, with its portfolio intelligence used to help prepare senior executives for discussions with Wall Street analysts.
